By this time, Les was playing with many bands as a pianist, up and down the country. One day a very well known guitarist, Vic Flick, rang to ask if Les would like to play at Butlins for a summer season, which Les accepted. Vic became a life long friend and colleague from then on. Also appearing for the season was a new band, Cliff Richard and The Drifters, playing in the room below Les and Vic. This event was their very first excursion into show business. Before the season at Butlins, Les was the resident pianist at the Park Ballroom in Southampton, with the Frank Joynson Orchestra.
